This list is kept as accurate as possible, but only the office can give final verification as to the availability of a particular goat.

The information given about each goat reflects my personal opinion of them and is correct to the best of my knowledge, but mistakes do happen. The age of most goats generally appears as only an estimate as they seldom arrive with confirmed dates of birth (DOB).

Badger

Badger is small - a pygmy - but very feisty & happy to stand up to goats twice his size. His favourite trick is to emerge upwards at a fast rate of knots, knocking any food bowl out of the hands of an unsuspecting volunteer (& hopefully quickly into Badgers stomache)!

Originally found abandoned in Sussex.

Large male goat who's main preoccupation is food! Can be a bit boisterous in its persuit and also devious. He is one of several goats we have who can open the latches on doors, and has realised that letting the elderly residents out is a successful ruse for acquiring their extra rations!

Clarissa

Angora, mid sized rather portly goat. Shares a stable with Cleo, who she is devoted to. This close bond was highlighted recently when Cleo had an adverse reaction to her regular blue tongue injection. Cleo collapsed on the floor in great distress & it took her about an hour to emerged from her pen, obviously still feeling very poorly but happy to stand out on the concrete area. Clarissa came & stood next to her, just touching her for comfort. Then, the gates of the field opened and out bolted 100 goats to the buckets of fresh fruit & vegetables left out for them. Now Clarissa's main ambition in life is to eat as much as she can, but she just stood & watched, never moving a muscle & watched as the food was devoured. Clarissa stayed with Cleo for the rest of the morning until she was sure her friend was o.k. Perhaps the kind of devotion we all hope for.

Cashmere girl. Very nervous of people. Mid sized goat.

Young pygmy boy, half white, half iron grey in colour. Lives with Amber & Flora. Originally arrived at the sanctuary in the back of a police car, & was extremely nervous of people & quite difficult to handle. Led Bob a merry dance one afternoon by escaping through the fence & spending several hours running round the local horticultural centre before finally allowing himself to be recaptured. Slightly nervous of people but bribeable with food, although he has a tendency to jump up!

Cream / very pale blond girl. Mid sized goat. Lives on her own as she doesn't appreciate goat company!

Dido

Small black rather overweight female pygmy. Nervous of people. Shares a stable with a huge, rather boisterous goat called Bunny. Although they make a rather unlikely couple, Bunny is very protective of Dido; at night, he waits until she gives him the nod, then they will go into the stall together, but not until she says so. Fortunately, she has not taken on any of his bad habits.

Larger goat, with a lovely, gentle temperament.

Large golden blond boy. Gentle, but somewhat nervous of people. Shares a stall with Rosa, who this picture shows him with (Dougall is the larger goat to the front). Dougall & Rosa have a modified climbing box in their stall, which they love to use for easy reach of their hay rack or to peer down upon any interlopers in their pen.

Dusty

New arrival January 2012 with Sandy. Pygmy's whose owners were sadly no longer able to look after them. One is brown & white & the other grey & white, but I'm not sure which is which as yet! May be suitable for fostering.

Elvis & Fauna were originally part of a larger herd used for conservation grazing on the Surrey Downs. Unfortunately, due to horrific dog attacks the herd had been reduced until just 4 remained. Elvis himself only just survived a horrendous attack, suffering the loss of an ear and terrible wounds to his throat. For their safety, friends decided the only solution was to send the remaining goats to Buttercups.

Being part of a feral herd, none of the animals were used to human contact & it has taken some time to win their trust.

Initially, impossible to handle, we had to wait for Fauna to put herself to bed at night & anyone coming too close prompted her to leap from stable to stable, somehow always managing to avoid their surprised occupant. Now reunited with Elvis (after his stay with the batchelor boys), he is slowly giving her more confidence to trust people.

Mid-sized blond girl - very friendly with people & gentle. New arrival Nov / Dec 2011. shares a stable with Tiddler.

White large female goat, who has adopted Amber & Dennis. Gentle & friendly.

Flossie (white)

Very gentle lady with lovely kind temperament. Mid-sized. Flossie has a shortened tendon in her front leg which causes her to limp. As a result, she's not that quick on her feet and is slightly nervous of the other goats. Usually found on the periphery of the main action, having a quiet munch on grass or snoozing.

A medium sized girl, she is nervous of people, although she is getting better. No good if you want a goat to cuddle, but hopefully a patient Guardian will be able to teach Flossie people can be fun.

A medium sized gentle nanny goat who is getting on in years, Fudge shares a stable with her daughter Toffee. Fudge loves people & welcomes the opportunity for a good head rub up against the buckles of volunteers welly boots.

White, mid-sized Angora girl with a bit of an attitude. She doesn't seem to like people very much - she manages to look like she's scowling disapprovingly at some mistake you've inadvertently made. She can also be difficult to handle, so definitely not suitable for children. She shares a stable with Joey.

Rescued when 3 weeks old together with Natalie by a good Samaritan from the meat market. Kept by their saviour in the back garden until they eventually outgrew it & came to Buttercups.

Brown, blabk & white mid-sized girl, although she may still have some growing to do. Loves people & getting into mischief - her favourite trick is poking her head through the cat flap into the tuck shop in search of that ever elusive next carrot. Extremely inquisitive.

Rescued when 3 weeks old together with Nadia by a good Samaritan from the meat market. Kept by their saviour in the back garden until they eventually outgrew it & came to Buttercups.

Originally came in together with Shakespear from a home in Weston-Super-Mare. The original owner was given the 2 billys as a surprise birthday present by his sons. He had a small piece of scrub land near the house & had always jokingly said he would get a goat to clear it of undergrowth. But, the field fencing was unsuitable, they had a simple field shelter to sleeping under, & the man had little time to give them any attention. The desperate telephone call to Buttercups came from a neighbour 3 gardens away; 'The goats keep getting out, jumping the fence, & have already devastated the two gardens in between. I am contacting you before they reach my garden. Please can you help?’

Shy & gentle, mid-sized lady. She has a deformed mouth due to health issues but, although this makes eating more of a challenge for her, she copes well.

Tiny white pygmy goat with black lowlights. Arrived with the rather inelegant name of Scabby, probably due to a long-standing problem she had with the skin on her back, which has now cleared up after treatment. Shy and nervous but very gentle. Shares a stable with Ben, who rather towers above her in terms of size.

New arrival August 2011. Pygmy boy with no horns. Chestnut brown, with black socks & distinctive white 'eyeliner' around eyes. Came to the sanctuary as the death of his partner left him alone. Gentle, inquisitive, lovely natured goat.

Stanley

Stanley is the tallest goat we have at the sanctuary, and is great pals with Alphie. They're like two teenage boys - always in the centre of any action & looking for mischief. Stanley uses any leverage he can get, be it fence or landrover, to lean up against so he can prune the leaves from the lower branches of the trees. He doesn't like being told what to do, and can sometimes be bad tempered, so he may not be suitable for guardianship.

Large, gentle goat. Shares a stable with Willow. Dark brown / black in colour.

Arrived at the sanctuary in July 2011. Pygmy iron-grey boy with a dinstinct black face. Has settled in well with the main herd.

When he came in, he was really shy of people but he's now learnt humans carry treats & can be fun so he's starting to become much more friendly. Nice natured.

Mid-sized white goat. New arrival Nov / Dec 2011. shares a stable with Fawn. Seems to have a gentle, friendly temperament.

Tin Tin

New arrival January 2012. Medium-sized goat, brown with black markings - very similar in appearance to David & Gordon. Lively young boy living in the batchelor boy herd.

Not sure how the intrepid Ralph managed to get this aerial shot - was he chased up a tree by our new arrival?!!!

Large, but gentle, male goat. Shares a stable with Leslie. He loves attention and tends to follow the volunteers around as they carry out their duties. Very photogenic (a poser?) - features in a large proportion of the santuary photographs!

Arrived at the sanctuary in June 2011 with Selina & Beatrice. DOB @ 2010. Anglo-nubian - very fine features - almost deer-like. Shy with people.

Vern

A lovely photo of the August 2011 arrival taken by Brian Squibb. Found abandoned at the sanctuary - luckily heard calling in the evening after the main herd had been put to bed. Named after one of the volunteers who came to his aid. Settling in well - he's now sharing a stall with the babies - Bernard, Wilfred & Gnomio.

William came to us with George from a sanctuary that lost its lease. Born with a severe birth defect to his face, William needs careful care and attention to ensure food is cut up small enough for him to cope with. He loves attention, is rather spoilt and, consequently, can be demanding!

He's a mid-size to large goat, Boer in breeding.
